Store policy

On this page

Mobile games with on-chain items, rewards or payments are reviewed under specific App Store and Google Play rules. This page is a working summary for Gully Studio teams, not legal advice, and store policies change often.

Heads up

Check the current policy text before each submission. Read the App Store Review Guidelines (opens in a new tab) and the Google Play Developer Policy Center (opens in a new tab) yourself. If this page and the policy disagree, the policy wins.

#Apple App Store

The relevant sections are 3.1.1 (In-App Purchase) and 3.1.5 (Cryptocurrencies). As we read them:

Topic What the guidelines say, in short
Digital goods and features used in the app must be sold with Apple's In-App Purchase, not with crypto or an external checkout, unless a specific exception or a regional rule applies
Crypto rewards for tasks apps may not offer cryptocurrency as a reward for completing tasks, such as downloading other apps, encouraging others to download, or posting to social networks
NFTs apps may let users view NFTs they own; selling NFTs, or services tied to them, falls under in-app purchase rules; NFT ownership must not unlock features or functionality in the app
Wallets wallet functionality is allowed for apps from developers enrolled as an organisation
Exchanges trading crypto is limited to approved exchanges in permitted regions

What it means for a Gully Studio iOS build:

  • Items and currency bought inside the game go through In-App Purchase on iOS, even though other platforms use Gully Pay.
  • Offerwall offers that pay crypto for installing apps, sharing or similar tasks are not allowed on iOS. Plan an iOS variant of the offerwall without them.
  • Show on-chain items as owned collectibles; do not make features depend on holding a specific token.

#Google Play

Google Play has a Blockchain-based Content policy plus its rules on payments and real-money gambling. As we read them:

Topic What the policy says, in short
Tokenized digital assets (NFTs) allowed in games under conditions; apps must declare and disclose them clearly to users
Selling tokenized assets must not be promoted as an investment or a way to earn money
Earning crypto rewarding users with crypto for actions such as watching ads or installing apps may be restricted; check the policy for the regions you ship in
Gambling mechanics loot boxes or paid chances to win tokenized assets of real-world value can fall under real-money gambling rules, which need licences and approval
Payments for digital goods Google Play Billing is required for most in-app digital goods, with regional exceptions

#Offerwall rewards on mobile

Rewards for completing offers are the area with the most risk on both stores. Before an offerwall ships in a mobile build:

  1. List every offer type and the reward it pays.
  2. Check each against the current Apple and Google text for "rewards for tasks" and incentivised installs.
  3. Disable offer types that are not allowed per platform (and per region where rules differ).
  4. Write it down in the release notes for review.

See Offerwall.

#PC and web

Steam, the Epic Games Store, itch.io and the web have their own rules on blockchain content; some stores do not accept games with crypto or NFTs at all. Check the store's current terms before planning a release there.

#Practical rules

  • Keep on-chain features optional where a store requires it: a player without a wallet must still be able to play.
  • Never describe items, glUSD or rewards as an investment.
  • Keep testnet assets clearly labelled as test assets with no value.
  • Record which policy version you checked, and when, in the release checklist (Release and CI).
